Fake bomb eludes airport test

Posted on July 10th, 2007 at 20:14 by John Sinteur in category: Security

[Quote:]

Federal inspectors were able to slip a fake bomb through a checkpoint at Albany International Airport during a test of the facility’s Transportation Security Administration screeners, according to individuals familiar with the incident.

The unannounced inspection by TSA officials took place early last week. The airport’s security measures failed in five of seven tests, most of the problems occurring at the passenger checkpoint, the sources said.

In one test, TSA inspectors hid the components of a fake bomb in carry-on luggage that also contained a bottle of water. Passengers are prohibited from carrying containers holding more than three ounces of liquids, gels or aerosols through airport checkpoints.

The screeners at Albany International confiscated the water bottle but missed the bomb.

Feel safer yet?

  1. Albany’s comment would be of course: our checkpoint is designed to spot real bombs, not fakes… =)

David Vitter | U.S. Senate

“This is a real outrage. The Hollywood left is redefining the most basic institution in human history, and our two U.S. Senators won’t do anything about it.

We need a U.S. Senator who will stand up for Louisiana values, not Massachusetts’s values. I am the only Senate Candidate to coauthor the Federal Marriage Amendment; the only one fighting for its passage. I am the only candidate proposing changes to the senate rules to stop liberal obstructionists from preventing an up or down vote on issues like this, judges, energy, and on and on.” stated David Vitter.

Official: Iraq gov’t misses all targets

Posted on July 10th, 2007 at 13:36 by John Sinteur in category: Mess O'Potamia

[Quote:]

A progress report on Iraq will conclude that the U.S.-backed government in Baghdad has not met any of its targets for political, economic and other reform, speeding up the Bush administration’s reckoning on what to do next, a U.S. official said Monday.

One likely result of the report will be a vastly accelerated debate among President Bush’s top aides on withdrawing troops and scaling back the U.S. presence in Iraq.

The “pivot point” for addressing the matter will no longer be Sept. 15, as initially envisioned, when a full report on Bush’s so-called “surge” plan is due, but instead will come this week when the interim mid-July assessment is released, the official said.

“The facts are not in question,” the official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the draft is still under discussion. “The real question is how the White House proceeds with a post-surge strategy in light of the report.”

Anyone want to bet that the WH will claim progress, and a turned corner or two?

Supermarket Surroundsound/scent

Posted on July 10th, 2007 at 9:25 by John Sinteur in category: If you're in marketing, kill yourself

The new supermarket near our house has an automatic water mister to keep the produce fresh. Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the smell of fresh rain.

When you approach the milk cases, you hear cows mooing and witness the scent of fresh hay.

When you approach the egg case, you hear hens cluck and cackle and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.

The veggie department features the smell of fresh buttered corn.

I don’t buy toilet paper there any more.

iPhone bullshit

Posted on July 10th, 2007 at 6:52 by John Sinteur in category: Apple

[Quote:]

The iPhone battery will only survive about 300-400 recharges, the company says. Because the unit is sealed, consumers can’t swap out dead batteries. Instead, dead phones must be sent to Apple, where battery replacement will take three business days and cost $79 plus a $6.95 shipping charge. Those who can’t live without their cell phones for those three days can rent a spare iPhone for $29.

[Quote:]

It’s not like this is a trivial little detail – the idea that iPhone batteries will die after 300 charges is the entire crux of his 1100-word report. Note that his comment thread is chock full of remarks from readers who completely believe his report.

And what Apple really says:

[Quote:]

A properly maintained iPhone battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 400 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs.

Is “reading” optional in school these days?

  1. Not to bash the iPhone or Apple (you know where I stand) but this should be in ‘if you’re in marketing…’. Read carefully what Apple says: ‘UP TO 80%’. You know when shops sell stuff with savings UP TO 80%, how much stuff in there really sells with a 80% discount… Now if Apple had said ‘AT LEAST 80%’, that’d be different!
