Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation.

An affidavit in the federal investigation into a prostitution ring said that a wiretap recording captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a hotel room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9.

Mr. Spitzer today made a brief public appearance during which he apologized for his behavior, and described it as a “private matter.”

“I have acted in a way that violates my obligation to my family and violates my or any sense of right or wrong,” said Mr. Spitzer, who appeared with his wife Silda at his Manhattan office. “I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public to whom I promised better.”

  1. Hypocrisy all around…from the gov. and from the press who can hardly contains their slobbering delight in their smugness - catching yet another official with his pants down. I’m not really sure why this is an issue; everyone knows that lots of folk shag people they perhaps shouldn’t - but the law is an ass in respect to sex in many places.
All heroes have feet of clay. Didn’t anyone learn anything from the Lewinsky affair?

  2. It isn’t really a case of catching a guy with his pants down, it’s a case of catching a guy with his pants down who was smug about catching guys with their pants down.

If it was just the sex, I’d tell him to have fun. But he was actively hunting people who did the same thing he’s now being caught for. As you said, hypocrisy.

  3. How funny is that a single call girl transforms into a prostitution ring overnight?
    I just love the spin.
Not that it excuses him. It’s just a lovely addition.
