Roland Hesz on Privatize the profits, socialize the loss. And when the day is over, why, oh why did noone went to prison and got their possessions confiscated?
You actually can't blame the shareholders and executives. The system actually rewards and encourages this kind of behaviour. Not to mention that they even have to do it. Maximizing profit for the shareholders is the law mandated goal of any corporation.
Lavaun Abbott on Privatize the profits, socialize the loss. Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac have been doing basically the same thing that Enron did -- buying high-risk "investments" -- in this case, mortgages with little hope of ever being repaid -- and palming them off on the investing public as secured investments. If companies like Countrywide, now down the tubes, and so many other go-go mortgage marketeers wanted make so many bad loans, our guarantors of a viable American housing market should never have been buying these mortgages & keeping them afloat for so long. The losers will be 401(k) & pension plans that invested in these government-sponsored corporations -- so it really is the American public losing both ways.
CJ on Palin lied about visiting Ireland as part of her foreign policy experienc In response to Gene, I agree that we have not seen a quote from Sarah Palin stating incorrectly that she has been to Ireland. However, her representatives and/or the representatives of the McCain/Palin campaign intentionally misled the press (Ben Smith) when they tried to make Palin seem more internationally traveled and experienced by stating that she had been to Ireland. The Republicans have a lot of ground to make up in explaining things about Palin's lack of experience and some of her controversial policies and political actions. The use of the statement that "Palin lied" may be twisting the matter slightly, but she is responsible the people who represent her. Her camp or the McCain camp did lie to the public about the "visiting Ireland" experience.

Maarten on Apple Rejects Fart-Joke iPhone App I thought the interesting part of this is the bit you left off the quote: the claim that this is making developers shy about putting effort into apps that may not be accepted.
I can't really get too upset about the fact that Apple doesn't want a fart sound playing app on their device. At the same time, I'm actively wondering if I'm willing to participate in this ecosystem as a developer.
Gene on Palin lied about visiting Ireland as part of her foreign policy experienc To be fair, I have yet to find any evidence that Palin lied about her Irish visit. I did read about a spokesperson saying something about it but I have not seen "the lie". It is interesting how the media twists so much of what is said about both parties and I have been seeing the media do this for decades. I say this from a neutral standpoint and find that most people are not voting for any candidate but rather voting against the one they like least.
