Teacher lets Morningside students vote out classmate
[Quote:]
After each classmate was allowed to say what they didn’t like about Barton’s 5-year-old son, Alex, his Morningside Elementary teacher Wendy Portillo said they were going to take a vote, Barton said.
By a 14 to 2 margin, the students voted Alex — who is in the process of being diagnosed with autism — out of the class.

As the parent of a child with autism and someone who grew up being abused by my peers because of my obviously dysfuncional upbringing, my emotional reaction is that I hope this woman is never allowed to be near another child again. Her behaviour disgusts me.

I have been in the education system for over 18 years, and work with the Behavior Disorder children. I have never enterained the idea of such cruel and heartless plan even though my children can and have been very difficult. I know they behave like that because of their special needs, and I deal with it accordingly.
I can only pray that Alex can overcome this incident, although I fear this may not be an isolated one for him. My heart goes out to his family, as well as the class that were subjected to this lesson plan by this heartless teacher.
The articles said that the teacher had full knowledge of Alex’s needs and attended meetings concerning him. Shame on that teacher for not admitting she was incapable of handling a special needs child.
