Middie McCain More Moron than Maverick

There’s an old joke. What do you call the person who graduates last from medical school? Doctor. Well, I got a new one. What do you call the person who graduates fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis? The Republican Party nominee for President. That’s right. Senator John McCain actually graduated 894th out of 899 middies at the Naval Academy. Only five other crew cuts achieved less than John McCain did in his class at Annapolis. And he was the son and grandson of U.S. Navy Admirals! He was a legacy, which means they probably had to keep his sorry dumb ass in the Navy!

Now, there are several ways to look at this little tidbit: he didn’t want to be there, he hated his father, he was an entitled Navy brat who knew that because of his father’s power and position he was never going to be kicked out, he was immature. But, seeing as I’m not a Dr. Phil and due to the staggering lowness of his ranking, I logically must infer something else: This man is dumb. I mean, McHale’s Navy dumb. Gomer Pyle dumb. Sit on the TV and watch the couch dumb. Fart into your own telephone to nail a friend dumb. 894 out of 899! That’s not “C” student. That’s “D” student. If the Navy graded on a curve, maybe even “D-” student. We’re talking a “special” kind of dumb. And I mean “special,” as in retarded. That’s “Run, Forrest, Run” dumb. That’s “I enlisted because I didn’t want to get drafted.” “There is no draft.” “There was one?” dumb.

894th! Statistically, he wasn’t even in the top of the bottom 1% of his class. Compared to John McCain, George W was a fucking Rhodes Scholar!

  1. This whole argument is stupid.
If someone places last in the Olympic games, then he probably is an awful runner no? What were his scores? The actual scores?
I am sorry, but this article is just dumb. Dumber than Maverick.

  2. The olympics has qualifiers in each country. Naval Academy is more an (and it’s in the name) Academy, or college. An Olympics comparison would have McCain coming in second last in the qualifiers of Luxembourg.

  3. This is completely retarded. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates didn’t even graduate, so they must be dumber than McCain. Riiiiiiight.

  4. No, John. He was admitted to the Academy. The guy says he finished second last. So, just in theory, if everyone else was straight A+, and he got 1 B mark, then this article would name him a moron.
This is simply a stupid, and rather populist article.
Accidentally, Academies and colleges have qualifiers. You have to qualify to enter. And for your example. If someone comes in second last in the qualifiers of Luxembourg, and the Luxembourg qualifiers had Ben Johnson calibre runners, then he still would be a good runner I guess.

I am not arguing that McCaine is dumb, I don’t know him. But the way the argument is made is invalid as arguments stand.
When someone tries to make an absolute value out of a relative comparison, then he cheats. And you as someone who is keen on science and such know it well, too.

  5. Okay, okay - if you *all* say so, there’s but one conclusion left: I’m wrong.

  6. John, wikipedia sez:

McCain had conflicts with higher-ups, and he was disinclined to obey every rule, which contributed to a low class rank (894/899) that he did not aim to improve.[11][12][13][14] McCain did well in academic subjects that interested him, such as literature and history, but studied only enough to pass subjects he didn’t like, such as math.

Plenty of evidence there to suggest that he’s smarter than his class rank would indicate.

  7. I see. You’re indeed right, and I’m not.

  8. You’re actually absolutely right. Your argument is not perfect — if everyone got straight A’s except for five people, four of whom got one C and John McCain of whom got one B, yeah, he would get that rank. But that’s not even remotely plausible. You know, I don’t want to throw this around, but I went to Harvard. And you’d think that everyone at Harvard must be incredibly smart just to be there. And it’s true, someone who’s really dumb wouldn’t have gotten in, PROBABLY. But if there were such a ranking system (as far as I know, there isn’t; I have no idea how they choose the student speakers), I’ve met some pretty dumb people who would still rank 100th from last or so. They’re not that smart. They’re not that intellectually curious. If they were, you’d think they’d manage at least a bit higher than 5th from last. John McCain may be smarter than his rank indicates, and more to the point, in the 50 or so years since his graduation, he’s probably matured enough that we can ignore his laziness in college, but not that much smarter, because, come on, you have to try pretty hard to suck that badly unless you have a natural gift for being a dumbass.
