I think it's more likely that Iran is using this as a way to goad the U.S. into a more confrontational stance with them. Irans gov't has used U.S. antagonism to turn Iranian public opinion toward hardline right-wingers for decades. Ever since the hostage crisis it's been a tride and true method for getting an increasingly fed-up Iranian public to elect hardline conservatives. Ahmadinijad's approval rating in Iran is sinking almost as fast as Bush's because he hasn't delivered on his promises to tackle corruption and economic troubles. He hasn't done so because it is the elements of HIS faction that are the biggest perpetrators of the corruption and economic mismanagement. The only way he'll stay in office, and keep the power in the hands of the hardliners, is if they trot out the American bogeyman again. Actually, sounds pretty much like what Bush is doing with the situation. I guess these guys understand each other more than we'd immediately think.

Some of the commentary on other sites suggest that the original image showed another launcher which had not fired and thus that the Iranians wanted to cover up that part of their test failed.

I wonder if the Iranian photoshopper is going to face severe repercussions from the fact that they didn't do this well enough to keep the forgery from being exposed.

For George:
You are right, I understand your point of view - the fact they used Photoshop does not make Iran less dangerous.
But what we get by this piece of news is a confirmation of the fact that Iran's governor are heavily using this whole missiles matter as a political device. They want to scare the West. If they just wanted to fire bombs, they would not give so much attention to public image and to representation of Iran by mass media.
This tells us that we can be a little (just a little) more afraid and a little more confident in the opportunity of getting results through diplomacy and negotiation. This should tell Western governments not to surrender too early to their requests, and to be a little bit firmer than they would have been had they believed that Iranians did not make it merely (or: almost merely) a fact of image.
It is makes no big difference, ok; but it's always a difference.
Hope this opinion answers your doubt ;)

So if I'm understanding this correctly, they launched 3 missiles instead of 4?
Is that any less threatening? Or am I missing something?

I'm not being facetious, I just don't think I get what the big difference is between the original and the fake is, as far as the impact (no pun intended) is concerned.
