Vetting process.

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Forget about vetting VP candidates, let’s talk about vetting pictures. If you’ve seen the McCain speech, you’ve seen this:

and wondered what it was. Well, it’s Walter Reed.

No, not the one you’re thinking of, it’s Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood, California.

Somebody probably did a google image search for ‘walter reed’, and came up with the wrong one - the school is pretty famous, so it’s an easy mistake.

Rather than a reminder of McCain’s POW past, they put him on a movie set. Comedy gold…

Alaska police union files complaint against Palin

Friday, September 5th, 2008

[msnbc:]

The GOP candidate for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, may be facing yet another ethics investigation back in her home state of Alaska. An ethics complaint obtained by NBC News was filed Wednesday by the police officers union in Alaska, requesting a probe into possible wrongdoing by the governor or her office. It was brought on behalf of state trooper Mike Wooten, an ex-brother-in-law of Palin who is at the center of the “Troopergate” scandal.

The complaint alleges that the governor or her staff may have have improperly disclosed information from Wooten’s personnel records. The complaint alleges “criminal penalties may apply.”

[cnn:]

“It’s apparent to us that the governor or someone on her staff had direct access to his personnel file, as well as his workers’ comp file, and those are protected,” said John Cyr, executive director of the Alaska Public Safety Employees Association.

[Quote:]

In response, the McCain-Palin campaign told NBC News that the files were not protected, and that Wooten himself had signed a waiver allowing a divorce lawyer to gain access to his personnel records. They added that Todd Palin, the governor’s husband, was the source of information for Bailey, and that the information came from Wooten’s divorce proceedings.

In other words, the McCain campaign is saying that Todd Palin gathered damaging information on Mike Wooten by looking through his divorce proceedings, then passed it on to an aide to the governor, who later used it to try to have Wooten fired. That may or may not be legal, but it doesn’t exactly sound like the kind of ethical, reformist approach to government that Governor Palin claims to stand for.

Whistleblower prompts review of German data protection laws

Friday, September 5th, 2008

[Quote:]

Germany’s Interior Minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, vowed today to tighten the laws governing how data on German consumers can be gathered, sold, and traded. Schäuble’s declaration comes after a call center whistleblower, Detlef Tiegel, handed a CD containing the banking details of some 17,000 German citizens over to the authorities. The information in question had been obtained (possibly purchased) by the unidentified company that employed Tiegel. The initial 17,000 records were only a fraction of the roughly 1.5 million records Tiegel claimed he could produce.

German officials took the man’s claims seriously enough to open their own investigation, and were dismayed when they were able to purchase 6 million records of personally identifiable information (PII) for a paltry €850 (~$1,220).

[..]

Schäuble blasted those who profit from mining customer data, and vowed to introduce “opt-in” legislation that would only allow companies to share the information of consumers who had specifically agreed to it. Current German law offers an opt-out solution, where companies may not share the data of those consumers who specifically object to it. Schäuble also mentioned the possibility of requiring German telephone sales callers to disclose exactly how and where they obtained a given person’s number.

Cindy McCain’s Outfit Cost Enough to Buy a Ninth Home

Friday, September 5th, 2008

One of the persistent memes in the Republican line of attack against Barack Obama is the notion that he is an elitist, whereas the G.O.P. represent real working Americans like Levi “F-in’ Redneck” Johnston

It caught our attention, then, when First Lady Laura Bush and would-be First Lady Cindy McCain took the stage Tuesday night wearing some rather fancy designer clothes. So we asked our fashion department to price out their outfits.

Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
Stuart Weitzman heels: $325

Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500
Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325

Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500

Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
Shoes, designer unknown: $600
Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100

No Questions, Please. We’ll Tell You What You Need To Know.

[Quote:]

According to Nicole Wallace of the McCain campaign, the American people don’t care whether Sarah Palin can answer specific questions about foreign and domestic policy. According to Wallace — in an appearance I did with her this morning on Joe Scarborough’s show — the American people will learn all they need to know (and all they deserve to know) from Palin’s scripted speeches and choreographed appearances on the campaign trail and in campaign ads. Here’s the exchange:

[..]

It’s important to them to know if Palin can handle herself in an environment that isn’t controlled and sanitized by campaign image makers and message mavens. Maybe she can, maybe she can’t. As far as Wallace is concerned, it’s none of their — or your — business.

That’s how the McCain campaign deals with people with unwelcome questions. Now compare with Obama:

U.S. House Price Decline Could Be Worse than Great Depression

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Home price declines are already approaching those in the Great Depression, when they plunged 30% during the 1930s. With prices already down almost 20%, it’s not a stretch to think we might exceed that drop this time around
