IBM will sell its PC division to China-based Lenovo and take a minority stake in the former rival in a deal valued at $1.75 billion, the companies announced Tuesday.

The two companies plan to form a complex joint venture that would make Lenovo the third-largest PC maker in the world, behind Dell and Hewlett-Packard, but still give IBM a hand in the PC business. The acqusition is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2005.

This will get IBM free from Microsoft – they can now pursue the PowerPC line for their servers, and ship Linux as much as they want.

Apple has accused the owner of iTunes.co.uk of being a cybersquatter, and taken him to UK registry Nominet demanding to be given the domain.

Unfortunately, the owner happens to be one Benjamin Cohen, the “dotcom millionaire” of lore, whose father is a solicitor, and Apple doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

As a press release put out by Cohen makes clear, he registered the domain “itunes.co.uk” on 7 November 2000, and two days later made use of it by forwarding it to a music search engine service at his CyberBritain site.

Apple, on the other hand, only had trademark for “iTunes” published in the Trade Marks Journal on 6 December 2000. It was granted a limited trademark that did not cover music products on 23 March 2001, and eventually went live with its iTunes offering in June this year – four years after Ben Cohen first registered iTunes.co.uk. Cohen claims he had no idea that Apple was planning to build an iTunes service, and that he has been using it legitimately all that time.

Apple has so far refused to comment on the case. Although it is currently being investigated by the authorities for price fixing with its iTunes service, so it probably has its hands full.

Het ZEW-instituut peilt voor zijn index driehonderd analisten en grote beleggers.

Maandag hadden de ministers van Financi�n van de eurolanden de Verenigde Staten opgeroepen hun tekorten op de handelsbalans en de lopende rekening van de betalingsbalans te verkleinen. Ook de Europese Centrale Bank deed een oproep in die richting. Die twee tekorten worden gezien als hoofdoorzaak van de zwakte van de dollar.

De NMa nam de kwestie onder de loep vanuit de Mededingingswet. De Opta kijkt ernaar met de Telecommunicatiewet in de hand, zo liet een woordvoerder weten. Vorige maand diende KPN officieel een klacht in bij Opta. “We zijn daarmee aan de slag gegaan, maar ik kan niet zeggen wanneer er een oordeel klaar ligt.”
