Critics argued that the cardinal would do little to heal wounds within the international church movement, and that he was far from the modernising force needed by Catholics in the twenty-first century. They also argued that he is uncharismatic, lacks leadership skills, and – despite being the ultimate Vatican insider – has never shown great interest in Rome’s inner administrative workings.

Unlike Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Ratzinger is unloved in his native country, where many ordinary German Catholics resent his hard-line stance against women priests and the involvement of lay congregations in church affairs, and his unwillingness to tackle the priest shortage that plagues many parishes.

The cardinal has not always held such conservative views, but, according to his older brother Georg, 81, even as a small child Joseph knew his goal in life. Following the visit of a German cardinal to their kindergarten, Joseph exclaimed: “I’ll also become a cardinal”, according to Georg.

Dixie Square Mall , in the mostly-blighted "inner ring" Chicago suburb of Harvey, Illinois, opened in 1966. It suffered gradual decline, until it closed in 1978. A year later, film crews gave the mall a brief makeover and Jake and Elwood Blues drove through the place. Then, nothing. For 20-plus years, the mall sat and decayed. Renovation plans (even a planned baseball stadium for the White Sox) were popular over the years, but never panned out. In 1993, a rape and murder took place in the JC Penney’s space.
From space, the mall looks beat up. From the ground, it looks even worse. Human fascination with deserted space has borne a number of websites and spelunking trips (along with some excellent then-and-now comparisons), and a documentary is apparently in the works. De lidstaten van de Europese Unie willen van alle 450 miljoen inwoners weten met wie zij hebben gebeld, ge-smst en e-mail verstuurd, vanaf welke plekken ze mobiel gebeld hebben en welke websites zij hebben bezocht. Tegen dit initiatief is veel verzet vanuit burgerrechten- en consumentenorganisaties en de telecomindustrie.

Vrijwel alle fracties in de Tweede Kamer twijfelden tijdens het debat op 12 april aan de noodzaak en effectiviteit van de bewaarplicht. De kosten zijn hoog, de privacy van burgers wordt aangetast en zelfs de LPF vroeg zich in het debat af wat de politie in hemelsnaam met die gigantische berg aan gegevens moet. Bovendien vinden de fracties dat de besluitvorming over een bewaarplicht op een meer democratische wijze moet verlopen.

Het voorstel voor de bewaarplicht is opgesteld door de Europese ministers van Justitie. Binnen de zogenaamde derde pijler kunnen de Europese ministers van Justitie en Binnenlandse Zaken zelfstandig beslissingen nemen, mits unaniem, over justitie- en veiligheidskwesties. De onderhandelingen binnen de derde pijler zijn geheim en de nationale parlementen krijgen slechts mondjesmaat documenten over de te nemen besluiten. Deze stukken komen meestal met veel vertraging, nadat de zwarte pen van de censor er overheen is geweest, bij de Tweede Kamer terecht. De Kamer kan pas op het allerlaatste moment beslissen over een besluit binnen de derde pijler en dan nog alleen door middel van een veto. ‘Slikken of stikken’ noemden Kamerleden deze gang van zaken in het debat.

Ook het Europees Parlement heeft bij de bewaarplicht niets in de melk te brokkelen. De Europarlementariërs mogen slechts een advies uitbrengen. De ministers van Justitie kunnen dat advies vervolgens in hun besluit ‘meenemen’. Met andere woorden; in de toelichting bij het besluit gaan de ministers uitleggen waarom ze het advies van het Europees Parlement naast zich neerleggen.

Tijdens debatten in de Tweede Kamer over derde pijler besluiten speelt minister Donner altijd het ‘te-vroeg-of-te-laat’-spel. Over het voornemen om verkeersgegevens te bewaren mogen de parlementariërs wel iets zeggen maar de minister kan er nog niets mee. Over de details van het voorstel wordt immers nog onderhandeld tussen de lidstaten en daarmee is het voorstel ‘nog niet rijp voor besluitvorming’. De Kamerleden zijn dus Te Vroeg met hun kritiek. Na verloop van tijd zijn de ministers klaar met onderhandelen en kan het besluit worden aangenomen. De Kamerleden zijn dan Te Laat.

In het debat over de bewaarplicht wordt het spel op een hoger niveau gespeeld. Juristen van de EU hebben namelijk geconcludeerd dat het voorstel voor een bewaarplicht illegaal is. De Europese ministers van Justitie mogen hier helemaal niet over beslissen omdat de bewaarplicht grote invloed heeft op de interne markt (verplichtingen voor providers) en de privacy van burgers. Over dergelijke onderwerpen mag alleen de Europese Commissie beslissen. Bovendien mag het Europees Parlement dan wijzigingen aanbrengen. Of daar een beter besluit uit te voorschijn komt is natuurlijk afwachten. Maar in elk geval mag een parlement er over stemmen en zullen alle stukken tijdens de procedure openbaar zijn.

Een normaal mens verwacht dat ministers van Justitie geen voorstel gaan maken dat illegaal is. Dus lijkt het logisch dat zij hun plan van tafel vegen en het werk verder overlaten aan het Europees Parlement. Zo werkt het echter niet bij Donner. De rechtsgrondslag (de vraag of het illegaal is of niet) komt pas aan de orde wanneer de minister het plan helemaal af hebben. Met andere woorden: ze gaan lekker door. Niemand die het snapt.

Donner werd een beetje moe van het uitleggen. De Kamerleden zijn gewoon nog Te Vroeg met hun kritiek. Ondertussen komen onbevestigde berichten uit Brussel dat het voorstel wel degelijk wordt ingetrokken. De Europese Commissie zou in september met een eigen voorstel komen. Blijkbaar levert dat zo veel gezichtsverlies voor de ministers van Justitie op dat Donner het de Kamer nog maar even niet vertelde.

Now check out this picture from last summer’s GOP convention in New York! Here’s the caption:

As you can see, the shot shows Coulter with a red grafitti-style “X” over her mouth with a scrawled “ENEMY,” and calls her a “Reactionary Neo-Imperialistic Criminal.”

It also says the sign is from Communists for Kerry. That should have been a – pardon the hideous pun – red flag for those insightful Time editors. We know Time-Warner has had some accounting woes, but don’t these guys have Google up in Manhattan?

Communists for Kerry is a right-wing JOKE, guys — scroll to the end of this story and you’ll see how a credulous Fox News was also duped by these folks last summer.

Maybe the alert editors at Time could have noticed the sign directly behind the Coulter “protest” — it’s from a group called “Criminals for Gun Control.” Then there’s the sign on the right, “Liberating Iraqi Children from Tyranny is Co$ting Too Much,” from the infamous group called Protest Warrior.

As we reported last fall. Protest Warrior is a group of right-wing college students that went around to left-wing protests causing trouble. There appeared to be a close link between Protest Warrior and a Penn student named Scott Robinson who was linked in numerous reports last fall to the kicking of an AIDS protestor at the RNC in NYC last summer.

Anyway, this whole photo mishap shows just how much care and thought that the editors of Time put into their cover story on Coulter. It also just goes to show what happens when you so desperately want something to be true.

The “Vacancy of the Apostolic See” Web page appears to have been prepared one day BEFORE the Pope’s death.

The page’s <http://www.vatican.va/gpII/documents/index_en.htm> HTML markup contains the following meta tags:

Thus it appears that the web page was created on April 1st, yet the Pope’s death certificate clearly indicates that the Pope died on April 2nd.

It is a well-known fact that journalists prepare in advance obituaries of public figures that appear to be nearing their life’s end. See for example the article “Quirk in British Computer Privacy Laws” (RISKS-11.63).

Nevertheless, for the Vatican’s content creators to advertise the fact that they were creating the “Vacancy of the Apostolic See” Web page while the Pope was still alive and struggling is at the very least a sign of poor taste; worse, the fact will now provide food to conspiracy theorists who thrive on these details.
