Een halve oplossing. Als ze er echt iets aan willen doen, stoppen ze dit onder artikel 27 van de WOR.

The Financial Times says it has seen a copy of the amended directive, penned by the bill’s rapporteur, Michel Rocard. Mark MacGann, president of Eicta told the FT: “This proposal would eliminate much of the patent protection accessible today by the industry in Europe. But Green MEP Eva Lichtenberger told the paper: “We want to be very clear in excluding many applications [from patent protection]. We must be aware that small and medium-sized companies in particular are hurt by patents.”

The FBI said on Wednesday a grenade thrown at President George W. Bush during a visit to Georgia last week had been a threat to the American leader and had only failed to explode because of a malfunction.

President Nout Wellink van De Nederlandsche Bank is voorstander van de Europese grondwet en vindt het “volstrekt ten onrechte” dat de euro in de discussie wordt betrokken. Over the past two years, I have compiled a database of every suicide bombing and attack around the globe from 1980 through 2003 – 315 in all. This includes every episode in which at least one terrorist killed himself or herself while trying to kill others, but excludes attacks authorized by a national government (like those by North Korean agents against South Korea). The data show that there is far less of a connection between suicide terrorism and religious fundamentalism than most people think.

The leading instigator of suicide attacks is the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, a Marxist-Leninist group whose members are from Hindu families but who are adamantly opposed to religion. This group committed 76 of the 315 incidents, more than Hamas (54) or Islamic Jihad (27). Even among Muslims, secular groups like the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Al Aksa Martyr Brigades account for more than a third of suicide attacks.

What nearly all suicide terrorist attacks actually have in common is a specific secular and strategic goal: to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from territory that the terrorists consider to be their homeland. Religion is often used as a tool by terrorist organizations in recruiting and in seeking aid from abroad, but is rarely the root cause.

Three general patterns in the data support these conclusions. First, nearly all suicide terrorist attacks – 301 of the 315 in the period I studied – took place as part of organized political or military campaigns. Second, democracies are uniquely vulnerable to suicide terrorists; America, France, India, Israel, Russia, Sri Lanka and Turkey have been the targets of almost every suicide attack of the past two decades. Third, suicide terrorist campaigns are directed toward a strategic objective: from Lebanon to Israel to Sri Lanka to Kashmir to Chechnya, the sponsors of every campaign – 18 organizations in all – are seeking to establish or maintain political self-determination.

This conclusion is interesting in that it suggests that the U.S. occupation is the problem, and that the chorus of ‘moderates’ claiming that we must stay until Iraq is “fixed” are essentially advocating a nonsense non-solution which will, in fact, make things worse.

In a brilliant display of lawyering (or at least Hollywood script-writing), Kaffee traps Jessup in Jessup’s own Titanic-sized logic gap.

In a memorandum dated January 19, 2003, the Pentagon issued a detailed set of rules regarding the proper handling of the Koran at Gitmo:”>

More than two years ago, the Pentagon issued detailed rules for handling the Koran at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, requiring U.S. personnel to ensure that the holy book is not placed in “offensive areas such as the floor, near the toilet or sink, near the feet, or dirty/wet areas.” (boldface added)

The three-page memorandum, dated Jan. 19, 2003, says that only Muslim chaplains and Muslim interpreters can handle the holy book, and only after putting on clean gloves in full view of detainees.

The detailed rules require U.S. Muslim personnel to use both hands when touching the Koran to signal “respect and reverence,” and specify that the right hand be the primary one used to manipulate any part of the book “due to cultural associations with the left hand.” The Koran should be treated like a “fragile piece of delicate art,” it says.

The memo, written a year after the first detainees were brought to Guantanamo from Afghanistan, reflects what U.S. officials said was a specific policy on handling the Koran, one of the most sensitive issues to Muslims. The Pentagon does not have a similar policy regarding any other major religious book and takes “extra precautions” on the Muslim holy book, officials said.

Certainly this memorandum begs the question, why did the Pentagon feel the need to issue such a memorandum, at that time, in that amount of detail, and specific to Gitmo?  

The memorandum was issued about a year after the first detainees were brought to Guantanamo.

The memorandum is three pages long, with the gist being “don’t defile the Koran.”  But instead of a short admonition, the memo goes into detailed, specific procedures, even describing with which hand the Koran should be held and how it should not be turned over when being wrapped in a towel.

The WaPo article above states that the Pentagon “does not have a similar policy regarding any other major religious book”.  

Are we to believe that someone at the Pentagon spontaneously (and without precedent) decided, while wading through the blizzard of torture memos floating around, that the Pentagon should officially develop and distribute a three-page policy on the proper handling of the Koran so as not to offend the religious sensibilities of detainees at Gitmo?  

Why did the Pentagon feel the need to issue such a memorandum, at such a time, and in such detail?  Why would it be necessary?

Waarschijnlijk hebben we onze buik vol van de kaasmarkt, Delfts blauw, mannen met snorren en oranje kroontjes kotsend in onze hoofdstad, broedende nijlganzen en bivakmutsdragende bakbrommertrijders.

Want ons NEE, dat wij uiteraard massaal gaan laten horen tijdens het referendum aangezien wij democratisch gezinde burgers altijd en masse naar de stembus hollen als er gestemd mag worden, gaat the end of the Netherlands as we know it betekenen. Exit tolerantie. Exit pijs, vree, melk en honing. Exit spruitjes, stampot, bloembollen. Exit Geert Mak en de eeuw van z’n ouwe. Wat zeg ik: exit heel Europa!

Wat een NEE allemaal niet kan betekenen…Over vijftig jaar zal er geschreven worden: ‘denkend aan Holland, zie ik prikkeldraad, wachttorens, stof en as. Ondersteboven hangen de lijken, traag wapperend in de nucleaire winter.’

En dat allemaal dankzij U. Ondankbare burgers! Hypocriete honden! Heeft de regering al die tijd zo haar best gedaan om wat moois op te bouwen, zoals een nieuwe munt die helemaal niks duurder heeft gemaakt, een prachtig samenwerkingsverband met een nauwelijks fascistoide Italiaan, een mooi nieuw hoger onderwijssysteem waar je voorlopig geen zak mee kunt, een dijk van een internationale arbeidsmarkt, Camiel Eurlings op een belangrijke positie en natuurlijk een zeer betrouwbare en bijzondere betrekking met de V.S. (eigenlijk een maquette van een groot duizendjarig Europa) en wat krijgt die lieve, hardwerkende, door en door betrouwbare en goed naar de burgers luisterende regering daar voor terug? Een NEEN! Een dikke middelvinger recht in het gezicht! Stank voor dank!

Maar zoals gezegd, het zal u allen gaan berouwen. Op den dag dat u uw buren uitmoordt, in de nacht dat ook u boeken verbrandt en kerken in de fik steekt zult u terug denken aan die mooie zomerdag in juni waarop u de NEE-knop indrukte en daarmee uw lot bezegelde. Op die dag zult u terugdenken aan de prachtige propaganda van Donner en Balkenende, van de vele overtuigende waarschuwingen, van de waterdichte CDA-logica. U zult dan het schoolmeestershoofd van Donner weer voor u zien en hem de woorden ‘holocaust’ zien prevelen.
Bittere tranen zult u plengen. Wroeging tot in het diepst van uw ziel zult u voelen. Wenend en tandenknarsend zult u uw eigen ‘NEEN’ vervloeken tot 500 geslachten na u.

Geniet nog maar van uw laatste dagen. Binnen onafzienbare tijd zullen de poorten van de hel geopend worden en de satanische hordes over het gazon van de buren denderen. Kijkt u nog maar eens goed naar al dat moois in de wereld. Luistert u nog maar, zolang het nog kan, naar Jantje Smit, BZN, Kane en al die andere prachtige verheven componisten die de laatste dagen van dit vredige europa naar het graf begeleiden. En vergeet dan vooral niet dat uw lot in eigen handen ligt. Want 1 juni is de Dag des Oordeels. Zo staat het al duizenden jaren geschreven.

Dat blijkt uit een uitspraak van het Hoger Regionaal Hof van Hamburg. Daarmee verwerpt het Hof een vonnis van een lagere rechtbank, zo meldt de Duitse nieuwssite Heise. Volgens het Hof bestaat er geen wettelijke basis voor het opeisen van naam-, adres- en woonplaats- (naw) gegevens van internetters die via internet muziek aanbieden.

In deze zaak wilde de muziekindustrie weten wie er verantwoordelijk was voor een ftp-server waar de nummers ‘Zwitter’ en ‘Rein Raus’ van Rammstein konden worden gedownload. Volgens het Hof hoeft de provider deze informatie echter niet te verstrekken. De reden: de internetaanbieder is niet verantwoordelijk voor de inbreuk op het auteursrecht.

Het vonnis van het Hof betekent een overwinning voor de Duitse internetaanbieders. De vraag is echter hoelang de providers de muziekindustrie buiten de deur kunnen houden. De Duitse politiek werkt namelijk aan wetgeving die providers naar verwachting wel zal verplichten om informatie over hun klanten af staan.
