Police go big with victim picture

A 60ft high picture of a murdered prostitute has been projected onto a derelict block of flats in Glasgow.

Detectives hope it will help to turn up clues about the death of Emma Caldwell, whose body was found in woods in South Lanarkshire on 8 May.

The image was displayed for four hours on the multi-storey flats in Cumberland Street, Hutchesontown on Monday night.

Police said the site had been chosen as it was visible across areas frequented by Emma and other prostitutes.

The picture, which shows Ms Caldwell half smiling but looking gaunt on a family day out in the countryside, was released by police last week.

Detective Superintendent Willie Johnstone, who is leading the investigation, said: “This is an innovative way of putting a fresh appeal over to the public and it will be very eye-catching.

‘Vital information’

“Someone out there know something and people who see this may be able to provide that vital piece of information that could solve the case.

“As far as we are aware, this is the first time that a law enforcement agency in the United Kingdom has used this type of appeal.”

Emma was last seen on 4 April walking in Butterbiggins Road, Govanhill. She had been living in a women’s hostel in the area.

  • 5 – PAR
  • 3 – PLKP
  • 2 – PNP
  • 2 – MAN
  • 1 – LNPA
  • 1 – Rignald Lak

    Camp Delta death chamber plan

Posted on May 24th, 2005 at 12:47 by John Sinteur in category: News

    [Quote:]

A court and execution chamber could be built at the US detention camp in Cuba under plans being drawn up by military officials.

Military tribunals for some of the hundreds of men detained at the US base on Guantanamo Bay moved a step closer last month with the appointment of a chief prosecutor and chief defence counsel.

Pentagon rules for the tribunals permit death sentences to be passed and the construction of a death chamber at the camp is among options being considered.

But defence officials stress that everything remains on the drawing board until orders are issued by the president.

“We have a number of plans that we work for short-term and long-term strategies but that’s all they are – plans,” camp commander Major-General Geoffrey Miller told the Associated Press news agency.

Posted on May 24th, 2005 at 11:25 by John Sinteur in category: Nederland is Gek!

    [Quote:]

    Amazon Rainforest

Virgin Amazon rainforest is seen bordering an area of hundreds of hectares of farmland that was jungle until recently, destroyed for lumber, farming and cattle raising, in Mato Grosso State, one of the Brazilian states with the greatest deforestation, May 18, 2005. The Brazilian government announced the latest data on deforestation of the Amazon Basin, with a total of 26,130 square km (10,089 square miles) of rainforest destroyed, equivalent to more than nine football fields every minute, during the 12-month period ending in August, 2004. The total is the highest recorded during the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in spite of his administration’s announced efforts to contain the destruction. First Holocaust museum geared to Arabs opens

Posted on May 24th, 2005 at 10:01 by John Sinteur in category: News

    [Quote:]

An Israeli Arab has opened what he calls the first Holocaust museum geared to an Arab audience, saying the prospect of peace would improve if Arabs knew more about the Nazi genocide against Jews.

Khaled Mahameed said he created his gallery to educate fellow Arabs about the World War II Holocaust, which seemed far removed from their lives but had a major impact on them.

    [..]

Many in the Arab world “are aware there was a Holocaust but choose to deny it because they don’t know exactly what happened,” he told Reuters. “Surely they would change their minds if they saw these pictures.”

In turn, he hopes Israel will acknowledge how Palestinians were hurt by its founding. “We are trying to break this cycle of denial by both sides. We want each to recognize that the other has suffered,” Mahameed said.

Hasbro recently released the first wave of Star Wars toys based on the upcoming movie. Each has large lettering on one side describing something about the toy or character. Most say something like, “Lightsaber Attack,” “Wookie Rage,” “Jedi Kick,” or “Firing Arm-Blaster.” One group, however, has the most insidious attack of all. They’re labeled “Republic Senator.”

… It was during a rainy seaside holiday in North Holland in June 1955 that Dick Bruna first drew a picture of a little white bunny and made up stories about it to entertain his one year old son.

That little bunny became Miffy – the star of 28 subsequent stories published by Bruna. Today, those stories are published in more than 40 languages and have sold over 85 million copies worldwide. Aged 77, Dick Bruna still works every day in his studio in Utrecht, Holland – this year he published his 109th storybook.

    1. Actually, Dick did not write the frist Miffy stories, this wife did. At some point she refused to do it any longer, because she felt he would be perfectly able to do it him self. She was proven right.
