Summary: Manuel II Paleologus fought the Ottoman Turks for the fragments of Byzantium. So, by citing him, the pope is evoking the the threat of a Turkish takeover of Christendom in a not-so-subtle way.

Still amuses me that the muslim segment of the world’s response to the pope calling their religion ‘evil and inhuman’ was to prove him right by issuing the normal death threats and killing innocent people. Statements like:

Given that kind of reaction, what do they expect people to think? First it was riots over a set of cartoons, now this. Time and time again they prove that they have not progressed past the middle ages, and that they think killing people is the answer to people who disagree with them. It’s amazing that they haven’t totally destroyed each other over the years (although they seem to be trying to do just that in Iraq at the moment).
Luck, not any god, gave them land rich in a valuable natural resource, but they continue to squander that luck by following these blood thirsty power crazed religious leaders instead of behaving like civilised human beings.
Oh yeah, the moment Benedict said he was quoting Manuel II, I knew he was warning us about the Turks.
It looks like you omitted the ‘sarcasm’ tag – anybody who’s aware of church history, and aware of the sensitivity of the church when it comes to church history, will indeed immediately spot the connection.
