The number of states refusing federal money for “abstinence-only” sex education programs jumped sharply in the past year as evidence mounted that the approach is ineffective.

At least 14 states have either notified the federal government that they will no longer be requesting the funds or are not expected to apply, forgoing more than $15 million of the $50 million available, officials said. Virginia was the most recent state to opt out.

“We’re concerned about this,” said Stan Koutstaal of the Department of Health and Human Services, which runs the program. “My greatest concern about states dropping out is that these are valuable services and programs. It’s the youths in these states who are missing out.”

The program doesn’t work, so what would they be missing out on?

  1. The programs actually DO work. Well, they don’t do what they’re intended to to, but they are just as effective as comprehensive programs. The Mathematica study that all these States are looking at while deciding whether to reapply states that students in either program are almost exactly as likely to have sex, and almost exactly as likely to use protection.

  2. I assume by “comprehensive” you do not mean a program where students are thought how their equipment works, how it can “malfunction” and stuff like that? I assume you’re just talking about US programs, because every single other Western nation is doing better.

  3. I imagine that what their missing out on is a load of religious BS and an unwanted early entry into parenthood. No doubt with a forced marriage too that will likely fail, leaving the already unwanted children dealing with a split family as well. Don’t see how they could be much worse off really.
