But we’ve hit a new low when the act of torturing our enemies while we’re at war has become a punch line on live TV.  There’s something very Roman about it.  I’m sure that fat, wealthy Romans thought the myriad ways in which the condemned were slaughtered in the Coliseum were hilarious, too.

But here, in America, in 2008, it belies a near-total disconnectedness between the war, the troops, and the American people.  This is what Al Michaels was exhibiting.

Thus, it’s not his joke that bothers me.  It’s the disconnected fog in which he, like many other Americans, lives.  And comments like this don’t surprise me–not anymore, at least.

But more importantly, it should surprise none of us that Rome now lies in ruins.  It’s the attitude.
