Microsoft officially 425 years behind the times

Posted on March 4th, 2008 at 21:05 by John Sinteur in category: Microsoft, They never learn

In the wake of our story about Exchange 2007 failing to realize that February 29 is a real day, one astute Reg reader pointed out that Microsoft has no excuse for allowing its software to behave this way. “The rules of the Gregorian calendar aren’t really that difficult to grasp,” said someone called MacroRodent. “They are not trade secrets. And they have been available for centuries.”

Nonetheless, the SQL Server 2008 “community technology preview” was brought down by the dreaded Leap Year Day bug just 48 hours after Microsoft unveiled it. “We have recently discovered an issue with SQL Server 2008 CTPs that result in SQL Server 2008 not starting on Feb 29 GMT only,” read a statement from the company. “We recommend that you do not run or install this CTP on Feb 29 GMT to minimize any impact in your environment. You can install starting on March 1 GMT.”

And there was a very similar problem with Windows Small Business Server. On Leap Year Day, Windows SBS was unable to issue itself certificates because it stamped each certificate with the date February 29, 2013. So, it failed to recognize the correct date. And it replaced the correct date with a date that doesn’t exist.

A depressing survey of what high-schoolers don’t know.

When did Columbus set sail for the New World? Who wrote The Canterbury Tales? In the Bible, what is Job known for? Who was Adolf Hitler?

These aren’t exactly brainteasers, but when the new education-advocacy group Common Core posed these and 30 similar questions about history and literature to 1,200 17-year-old high-school students (below on the following four pages), it discovered that American teenagers are “stunningly ignorant.”

All the test questions are included in the article..

Thanks, Sue

And I predict there will be little improvement..

Top 10 Most Fuel-Efficient Cars of 2007 in the USA

Posted on March 4th, 2008 at 16:50 by John Sinteur in category: News

[Quote:]

Rankings were determined using the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) miles-per-gallon ratings for city and highway travel. More specifically, we tapped the EPA’s combined fuel economy formula: 55 percent of city mpg rating plus 45 percent of highway mpg rating. The rating for each vehicle below is expressed in mpg as a city/highway ratio. All ratings apply to base models equipped with a manual transmission, except where indicated otherwise with an asterisk.

Four Toyota’s, three Honda’s, a Hyundai, a Nissan, and the Mini Cooper.

So much for US innovation…

  1. I guess that there aren’t may European cars cos they just don’t drive them in the states, but if they did there would still be no US cars in the list!

Abstinence-Only Driver’s Ed.

Car accidents are a leading cause of death for teenagers. The school board and your elected representatives want to make sure that you and your families are spared from such a tragedy, which is why the money for driver’s ed was eliminated from the budget. Whereas last year I was teaching your older siblings how to shift and brake and three-point-turn during a six-week course, it has since been decreed that I actually need just one afternoon to tell you the only piece of safety information I’m permitted by law to share:

The ONLY 100 percent effective method for avoiding car accidents is to ABSTAIN from driving until marriage.

Marc Andreessen: An hour and a half with Barack Obama

Posted on March 4th, 2008 at 12:44 by John Sinteur in category: Indecision 2008

Early in 2007, a friend of mine who is active in both high-tech and politics called me up and said, let’s go see this first-term Senator, Barack Obama, who’s ramping up to run for President.

And so we did — my friend, my wife Laura, and me — and we were able to meet privately with Senator Obama for an hour and a half.

The reason I think you may find this interesting is that our meeting in early 2007 was probably one of the last times Senator Obama was able to spend an hour and a half sitting down and talking with just about anyone — so I think we got a solid look at what he’s like up close, right before he entered the “bubble” within which all major presidential candidates, and presidents, must exist.

Very interesting read.

Jack Nicholson’s Hillary Clinton Ad

Posted on March 4th, 2008 at 12:15 by John Sinteur in category: Indecision 2008, Quote

Jack did an ad for Hillary:

Let’s finish that quote for him, and see if it still applies to Hillary:

“There is nothing on this earth sexier, believe me, gentlemen, than a woman you have to salute in the morning. Promote ‘em all, I say, ’cause this is true: if you haven’t gotten a blowjob from a superior officer, well, you’re just letting the best in life pass you by.”
