Bristol Palin, the 17-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, is pregnant and will keep the baby and marry the father, a senior aide to Sen. John McCain confirmed to CNN Tuesday.

Republican presidential candidate McCain was aware of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy before he chose her mother for his running mate, the aide said.

[..]

The aide said it was decided the campaign would reveal this information now because of rampant Internet rumors that Sarah Palin’s 4-month-old baby, who has Down syndrome, was actually Bristol’s.

“In the course of correcting that, we needed to get the truth out,” said the McCain aide.

Sarah and Todd Palin issued a statement saying they are “proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents.”

  1. I’m not interested in their personal business so much as I am where the VP stands on the issues. As far as that goes, she is so pro-life and anti-sexual education, it’s doubtful Bristol made this decision herself.

  2. Actually I agree with Obama on this one: it is sick to drag in the family. I think that people who support Obama should follow his advice and simply avoid this topic.

  3. Obama is saying “back off” because this is something even the tabloids will cover, there’s no need to tear into palin. It’s the same thing in rocket science: “back off!” is what they shout when a missile is misfiring on the launchpad–it’s either going to fizzle out or explode.

  4. Ok, then I modify my sentence: I agree with his words, not neccessarily his intention. I think this whole thing is sick, and disgusting.
But just my opinion, I sort of try to keep myself to the same line whether it’s about a democrat or republican, and I can’t accept the excuse of “but the other would do it too!”. If I did accept it I would go around stealing, for others do it too.

  5. I agree that the excuse “but the other would do it too!” is pretty stupid – that’s also not why I’m posing the stories. Palin is a very vocal proponent of “abstinence-only” education, and wants abortion outlawed. Looking at the effects of those policies on her own family is fair game. It’s basically the same reason the Edwards affair didn’t get much attention; he’s not the kind of politician who has made “family values” his main reason for being in politics, so I don’t much care about his own “family values”, even if my own viewpoint on staying true to the one you love doesn’t match his..

  6. Actually, if I look at Palin’s policy, her family shows on one side that:
    1) It’s a pretty stupid point of view, actually does not work
    2) She sticked to it even when it came to bite her family.

The real scandal would have been if she were a pro-life but made her daughter to make the abortion to save face.
So, I have a bit of mixed opinion here, for one I don’t agree with her beliefs, on the other hand at least she sticked to it even when it hit her family. So, they actually can spin it to “See, she is one who sticks with her beliefs, she is not a flip-flopper, she is adamant”.
That can be spinned in a positive light, and can be scary at the same time, W is adamant too.

This does not mean that I agree with her, far from it.
Looking at the effects can be fair game, but while I don’t know her daughter, lets not forget she did not choose her parents, we don’t know how it affected her, and not sure she deserves to be dragged into it, no matter what “is fair”.

Palin has enough hold on her that does not really warrant the public drag around of her daughter – who maybe is just like her mother, maybe is not, who knows, but just 17 years old kid, no put on the tabloid and made into a “bloody sword” carried around.

  7. 1) It’s a pretty stupid point of view, actually does not work

and her own family shows this, and still she won’t even think about her opinion. Do you want a VP like that?

but just 17 years old kid

Just imagine the book deal that kid is going to be offered in december…

  8. corrections: “just a 17 years old” and “now put in the tabloids”

  9. “Do you want a VP like that?”
No, definitely not, I just had a train of thoughts, and even labelled it as “scary” – and can be scary at the same time, W is adamant too.

“Just imagine the book deal that kid is going to be offered in december…”
Just imagine if she is actually a nice kid, and this scarred her for a life.
I know it’s easy to paint her the same as her mother “she must be a money and power hungry girl like mum” but not sure that would be true. Can be of course, but maybe not.
In the latter case the book deal won’t help her much.
