  1. Well in keeping with the philosophy “less is more”. However, I have to admit that Hobbes and I prefer the philosophy “more! more! more! is better!”. I guess that’s why my personal computer is 8x8x8 – 8 cores, 8GB RAM, and 8TB of disc… :-)

Recent scenes from Afghanistan

[Quote:]

Since he took office in January, President Barack Obama has ordered an additional 21,000 U.S. troops to be deployed to Afghanistan, which will bring the full U.S. deployment there to a total of 60,000 troops, joining 39,000 coalition troops from 43 countries. The U.S. administration plans to impose benchmarks for progress on both Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan, who struggle with problems tied to tribal rivalries, illegal drug production and distribution, religious factions, general instability and poverty. Collected here are photographs from the past few months of the situation in Afghanistan and the lives that continue to be affected by it. (43 photos total)

Women’s education has been severely compromised in Afghanistan as a resurgent Taliban has practiced a policy of intimidation of female students. Astronaut’s Head Upgraded During Spacewalk

Posted on April 1st, 2009 at 16:35 by John Sinteur in category: Great Picture

First, a new truss was added. Then, new solar panels were installed. Now, as part of the planned upgrade of the International Space Station, an Expedition 18 astronaut has upgraded her own head. The Human Extended Analog Device 9000 was attached with only minor delays, making the astronaut’s remaining spacewalks over 40 percent more efficient. With the HEAD 9000 attached, an astronaut can now directly access 4 Gigabytes of computer flash memory with their own brain, perform complex mathematics by “directed thinking”, and play a pre-installed game of Tetris at no additional charge. Happy April Fools’ Day from the folks at APOD. In reality, the space shuttle Discovery’s mission to upgrade the International Space Station ended Saturday after upgrading only the space station. The above image of astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper handling the box-like Nitrogen Tank Assembly was actually taken last November. For some reason, however, Astronaut Stefanyshyn-Piper can now factor 11 digit prime numbers in her head.

Truly, MIT is the Institute of NOWLEGE.

So it’s official: MIT students have a better sense of humor, hands down, than Harvard students. MIT students are more imaginative, more fun-loving, and probably smarter as well.

  1. Geeks understand underhanded humor better than Yuppies, Guppies, or Puppies (whatever that means:)! We pranked a young engineer colleague at work a couple of years ago when he was overseas on a business trip, in honor of his recent marriage – we performed a gender-change operation on his cube, including a name change on his tag from Paul to Pauline. Then we hid a small webcam in the bookcase and broadcast his reactions when he got back to the entire company (on 3 continents)… We were getting positive (ROFL type) email reactions from Europe, Asia, and the US, and I think he has kept copies of the videos and photos for his memorabilia collection – I know I did. FWIW, I think he was an MIT grad…

So, IMHO, geeks DO have a better sense of humor – and this MIT vs. Harvard one goes a long way to proving it! Nice job!

  2. Not that I am one to defend Harvard, but the sign is funnier with the latin u/v swap

  3. Pretty bogus “test”. Cheesy sign at one of the least used entrances to Harvard Yard, looks obviously cheap and with no attempt to fit in; resembles maybe a fourth grade effort. (What’s with that typeface? Why didn’t the sign even try to be size-appropriate for that gate?) Well done sign on one of the most visible (dare I say “iconic”?) entrances to MIT, fits in well; you could believe it was from a high school graduate. (Same type face as on adjacent buildings, same style as other “real student” banners placed over the same entrance a few times each year, with “extras” like instructions.)

It’s no wonder the people reacted differently to the two signs. One tried to be stupid, and folk reacted to it that way. The other tried to be at least slightly clever, and got the relevant reaction.

  4. It would have probably worked better if it was posted across the street at the entrance to the law offices of Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe. It would had garnered more attention for sure. That said, Dave must be a Hawvawd boy… He certainly proves he has no sense of humor!

  5. The only proof I see is that spiff seems to have an axe to grind!

That webpage showed no signs of supporting any truly scientific test of humor. Two weak datapoints, without even proof that the people observed were students at those institutions. (Harvard Square in particular has a huge non-student population, especially now that it’s turned into a shopping mall; and is a bigger tourist destination.) Notice the classic bully’s “defense”: if you didn’t like , that proves you have no sense of humor. The webpage was better spirited about it than spiff though … while stupid, it didn’t take itself any more seriously than any “sell some signs” campaign should.

For the record, I’ve attended *both* schools. There are geeks at both ends of Mass Ave. Ditto stupid people; ones with good senses of humor; and ones with no senses of humor. Hmm… just like the rest of the world.

Merrill Lynch Bonuses 22 Times The Size Of AIG

Posted on April 1st, 2009 at 15:57 by John Sinteur in category: Robber Barons

[Quote:]

Dennis Kucinich sent out a round of letters to top Treasury officials Monday morning, questioning how much they knew about bonuses paid to Merrill Lynch executives that totaled $3.62 billion, nearly 22 times the total bonuses paid to AIG executives. The payouts made up more that 36 percent of the TARP funds the financial institution received from the Federal government.

Kucinich points out that unlike AIG, the bonuses were not locked in by preexisting contracts and were performance bonuses, as opposed to retention bonuses.

Justice Dept. drops case against ex-Sen. Stevens

Posted on April 1st, 2009 at 15:56 by John Sinteur in category: ¿ʞɔnɟ ǝɥʇ ʇɐɥʍ

National Public Radio is reporting this morning that Attorney General Eric Holder has decided to drop charges pending against former Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska.

The 85-year-old Republican was convicted last fall of seven counts of lying on a Senate disclosure form to conceal $250,000 in gifts from an oil industry executive and other friends. The case was a key factor in his failure to win re-election.

But sentencing has been delayed among allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.

NPR reports that Holder decided to drop the case because of Stevens’ age, the fact that he is no longer in the Senate and as a means to send a message to federal prosecutors that misconduct will not be tolerated.

Commentary: War on drugs is insane – CNN.com

Posted on April 1st, 2009 at 15:40 by John Sinteur in category: News

Even CNN is now saying it out loud:

[Quote:]

What do you suppose the total price tag is for this failed war on drugs? One senior Harvard economist estimates we spend $44 billion a year fighting the war on drugs. He says if they were legal, governments would realize about $33 billion a year in tax revenue. Net swing of $77 billion. Could we use that money today for something else? You bet your ass we could. Plus the cartels would be out of business. Instantly. Goodbye crime and violence.

If drugs were legalized, we could empty out a lot of our prison cells. People will use this stuff whether it’s legal or not. Just like they do booze. And you could make the argument that in some cases alcohol is just as dangerous as some drugs. I know.

  1. And tax churches! If we truly have separation of church and state, then religions should get no preferential treatment in the tax codes! Let them deduct their real charitable activities, but let’s stop giving them a ride on their for-profit activities!

  2. The two of you need to form a ticket and run for office!

  3. Sorry, I’m not a US citizen. And pot is already pretty much legal in my jurisdiction. Funny thing is – I’ve never even tried it…

  4. I suspect I’m not unique in this regard, but pot never did anything for me.
