What if they offer you £20,000 a year more than you are currently making, with amazing benefits and flexible working hours (as happened with me) It would have been pretty stupid not to take the job. I don’t mind putting on a shirt and slacks that much.

Not good enough. Usually the shirts-and-slacks policy is a red-flag indication that there’s a fundamental mismatch between me and the company.
