On June 11th, the FPPC, in an unprecedented ruling against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, found the Salt Lake City based Church guilty on 13 counts of late campaign reporting. The Mormon Church was fined $5538 in an agreement worked out ending the 19 month long investigation. The Church was the primary backer of California’s Proposition 8, which ended gay marriage in California two years ago.

They spent at least $30 million, so this $5538 fine is a bit ridiculous. Why not take away their tax-exempt status instead?

  1. I would agree with that (removing tax-exempt status) along with full reimbursement of the costs of the investigation, plus revoking the results of the election since it was apparently the result of egregiously illegal campaign activity.

  2. Spaceman Spiff, you forgot the costs of the ongoing court battle….
