Google IP Vandalizing OpenStreetMap

Posted on January 17th, 2012 at 19:03 by John Sinteur in category: Google

[Quote]:

Preliminary results show users from Google IP address ranges in India deleting, moving and abusing OSM data including subtle edits like reversing one-way streets.

Two OpenStreetMap accounts have been vandalizing OSM in London, New York and elsewhere from Google’s IP address, the same address in India reported by Mocality.

Update: Google sent the following statement to ReadWriteWeb on Tuesday morning. “The two people who made these changes were contractors acting on their own behalf while on the Google network. They are no longer working on Google projects.”

Well – that must have been an awkward conversation…

Conservatives feud over Santorum endorsement

Posted on January 17th, 2012 at 17:29 by John Sinteur in category: Indecision 2012

[Quote]:

In an evolving power struggle, religious conservatives are feuding about whether a weekend meeting in Texas yielded a consensus that former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is the best bet to stop Mitt Romney’s drive for the Republican presidential nomination.

A leading evangelical and former aide to President George H.W. Bush said he agreed with suspicions voiced by others at the meeting of evangelical and conservative Catholic activists that organizers “manipulated” the gathering and may even have stuffed the ballot to produce an endorsement of Mr. Santorum over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

  1. You can’t trust any conservatives. You would think they would know that.

Journalism Warning Labels

It seems a bit strange to me that the media carefully warn about and label any content that involves sex, violence or strong language — but there’s no similar labelling system for, say, sloppy journalism and other questionable content.

How Will You Measure Your Life? – Clayton Christensen

Management is the most noble of professions if it’s practiced well. No other occupation offers as many ways to help others learn and grow, take responsibility and be recognized for achievement, and contribute to the success of a team. More and more MBA students come to school thinking that a career in business means buying, selling, and investing in companies. That’s unfortunate. Doing deals doesn’t yield the deep rewards that come from building up people.

Can you believe that was written by a professor at the top business school for an MBA class? The whole thing is worth a read.

Coastguard begged captain Francesco Schettino to return on board after wreck

Posted on January 17th, 2012 at 16:39 by John Sinteur in category: News

Coastguard to captain (who has already left the ship):

“There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board.

“Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?!

“Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!”

Captain to Coastguard: “Please ….”

Coastguard to captain: “There is no please about it. Go back on board. Assure me you are going back on board!”

  1. Notwithstanding his inacceptable behaviour, this translation is very misleading.

“Please” was not to be intended as “please, dont make me go back”, but as “please Commander let me talk”, since a lifeboat was purportedly blocking access to the ladder.

  1. That’s actually a pretty clever way to get on the ballot in a state where you can’t get on the ballot. I’m looking forward to seeing what % of the vote Herman manages to haul in, and only regret that I don’t live in South Carolina to vote for him…

The President’s challenge

Posted on January 17th, 2012 at 9:53 by John Sinteur in category: Intellectual Property

[Quote]:

As SOPA looks shakier, the President handed a challenge to the technical community:

“Washington needs to hear your best ideas about how to clamp down on rogue Web sites and other criminals who make money off the creative efforts of American artists and rights holders,” reads Saturday’s statement. “We should all be committed to working with all interested constituencies to develop new legal tools to protect global intellectual property rights without jeopardizing the openness of the Internet. Our hope is that you will bring enthusiasm and know-how to this important challenge.”

All I can think is: we gave you the Internet. We gave you the Web. We gave you MP3 and MP4. We gave you e-commerce, micropayments, PayPal, Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, the iPad, the iPhone, the laptop, 3G, wifi–hell, you can even get online while you’re on an AIRPLANE. What the hell more do you want from us?

Take the truck, the boat, the helicopter, that we’ve sent you. Don’t wait for the time machine, because we’re never going to invent something that returns you to 1965 when copying was hard and you could treat the customer’s convenience with contempt.

  1. Yes, copyright isn’t a technical problem, it’s a social problem, a business and legal anachronism.
In any case where a law is widely flouted, you cannot make it better by tightening the law.
