Higgs boson results from LHC ‘get even stronger’

Posted on August 1st, 2012 at 17:01 by John Sinteur in category: News

[Quote]:

The Higgs boson-like particle whose discovery was announced on 4 July looks significantly more certain to exist.

The particle has been the subject of a decades-long hunt as the last missing piece of physics’ Standard Model, explaining why matter has mass.

Now one Higgs-hunting team at the Large Hadron Collider report a “5.9 sigma” levels of certainty it exists.

That equates to a one-in-300 million chance that the Higgs does not exist and the results are statistical flukes.

A Port St. Joe man was shot in the head late Monday night in what Gulf County Sheriff Joe Nugent is labeling a hate crime.

Walton Henry Butler, a 59-year-old white male, was arrested after he admitted shooting Everett Gant with a .22 rifle. Butler was charged with attempted murder with a hate crime enhancement.

[..]

Nugent said Butler acted as if inconvenienced when put under arrest, saying he could not understand the problem as “he had only shot a (racial slur).”

  1. I think that should be a new category.

  2. Since you used that phrase again, I’m curious about your reaction my comment last time you did so were I argued the leading clause may not have any functional role in the amendment.

  3. If it has no role I can safely use it to mock, like I do here

  1. OK, I’m curious… why are you so fascinated by these people? To me is seems like “seen one, seen em all”.

  2. It simply never ceases to amuse/amaze me

  3. I always find it funny that they don’t see the contradictions.

Jesus Loves You! He is Merciful! Repent or Perish!

    Right.

  4. We all perish in the end….better to leave the Honda paint job alone.

  5. It’s a relatively new folk art (like modern tole painting) and should be documented, surely. I always read all of the captions so I guess they are evangelizing…These vehicles are a wonderful form of self-expression, clearly they want to do graffiti but don’t want to break the law.

“Repent now, for ye have covered your back window with Rustoleum, the wages of which are a bucket of VOC solvents and even more hallucinations.”

  6. Is it possible that this work was a message to the car’s owner?

  7. Crikey, that would be vandalism! I’m shocked…surely a Christian wouldn’t do that!
    Unless it’s washable paint…hmm…

  8. The car owner has a short memory and needs constant reminders? Most of them don’t remember the message once they leave church, so who knows?

Sudan: Give us Bush & Blair, we’ll give you Bashir

Amanpour asked Alazreg whether Sudan will hand over the country’s president, Omar al-Bashir, who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court. Alazreg responded by saying that Sudan is “willing to hand over whomever, provided that America hands over Bush and the United Kingdom hands over Blair.”

  1. I’m not sure about Mr. Bush, but Mr. Blair is so starved for attention he would probably go willingly to the ICC.

No Copyright Law: The Real Reason for Germany’s Industrial Expansion?

Posted on August 1st, 2012 at 8:30 by John Sinteur in category: Intellectual Property

[Quote]:

Indeed, only 1,000 new works appeared annually in England at that time — 10 times fewer than in Germany — and this was not without consequences. Höffner believes it was the chronically weak book market that caused England, the colonial power, to fritter away its head start within the span of a century, while the underdeveloped agrarian state of Germany caught up rapidly, becoming an equally developed industrial nation by 1900.

Even more startling is the factor Höffner believes caused this development — in his view, it was none other than copyright law, which was established early in Great Britain, in 1710, that crippled the world of knowledge in the United Kingdom.

Germany, on the other hand, didn’t bother with the concept of copyright for a long time. Prussia, then by far Germany’s biggest state, introduced a copyright law in 1837, but Germany’s continued division into small states meant that it was hardly possible to enforce the law throughout the empire.

Harry Reid: Bain Investor Told Me That Mitt Romney ‘Didn’t Pay Any Taxes For 10 Years’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has what he says is an informed explanation for why Mitt Romney refuses to release additional tax returns. According a Bain investor, Reid charged, Romney didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years.

  1. That is amazing, if true. I can’t think of any other logical explanation for Mr. Romney’s refusal to come clean. If we treated citizenship and taxes like golf club membership subscriptions, such people would be kicked out of the club.
