Plane crash video from inside cockpit

This is unprecedented footage of a small airplane crash from inside the cockpit from two different views. Miraculously, everyone survived. The pilot will make a full recovery and the rest of us escaped with superficial injuries and feel very lucky to be alive . This trip was much anticipated and due to our excitement we had our Gopro cameras filming at various times. After flying up into the mountains for a morning hike in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness we were planning on flying to a small mountain town for dinner. Due to warming temperatures there was an increase in density altitude and we had a hard time getting adequate lift. After taking off we hit an air pocket that made us rapidly loose altitude, pushing us down into the trees. The cameras were left on for a couple of hours during the aftermath. Thank you to all the many individuals who eventually came to our aid and took the time and effort to help in any way they could. We appreciate you more than you know.

NASA Calls It A Mission As Curiosity Rover Fills Up Whole 2-Gigabyte Memory Card

Posted on August 10th, 2012 at 20:20 by John Sinteur in category: News

[Quote]:

Barely 72 hours after the landing of its Mars rover, NASA officials announced Thursday that their mission had ended, as Curiosity’s two-gigabyte memory card was now filled to capacity. “Well, that’s that, folks,” said chief scientist John Grotzinger, explaining that after Curiosity’s Mars Descent Imager took an especially high-resolution JPEG of the Aeolis Mons mountain, the $2.5-billion rover’s SanDisk card only had 0.03 GB of space remaining. “Honestly, we thought two gigs would be more than enough. That’s like a 1,000 pictures, right? I guess we probably should have deleted those old Hubble photos off there before the mission.” Grotzinger confirmed that even if the rover had been equipped with a larger memory card, it likely would have had only enough power for a few more hours of exploration before it had to return to Earth to have its battery recharged.

  1. Ok John. The Onion is definitely one of my favorite sites, but let’s give NASA a break, OK? This has been an awesome achievement. At 40mbps to download the images to Earth, that’s only 400 seconds (about 6 1/2 minutes) in real time. Then they can click another 2GB of images and data. So, assuming they are always in range of the Earth, or an orbiting platform, they can take almost real-time HD video… :^)

  2. Way back in the good old days, there was a Dutch comedian who did a show on the evening of Dec 31th, reminiscing about the political year. Only after being mocked by him did politicians consider themselves to be important enough. It’s the same with the Onion. The fact that they make this joke means that Curiosity is a big deal.

New human species identified from Kenya fossils

[Quote]:

Researchers studying fossils from northern Kenya have identified a new species of human that lived two million years ago.

The discoveries suggests that at least three distinct species of humans co-existed in Africa.

The research adds to a growing body of evidence that runs counter to the popular perception that there was a linear evolution from early primates to modern humans.

As the anti-choice crusade continues throughout GOP controlled states, Dr. Ann Neuhaus bravely took up the cause of women’s rights after Christian jihadist Scott Roeder murdered Dr. George Tiller in 2009. Now, Dr. Neuhaus may lose her license for the “sin” of not forcing a mentally ill ten year old to carry her uncle’s baby to term.

Yesterday, I Went to the American Idol for Startups. It Made Me Want to Die.

But, oh, my God, the terrible things these people do to words. It’s like watching some sadist work over a baby lamb with a rusty crowbar and a broken gin bottle. The names of these startups sound like the products of an aggressive brain tumor on the frontal lobe. Crowdegy, Placeling, Kouply, QuoteRobot, Appthwack, Makegood, Onthego, Nickler, Kahal, Tanzio, Taskk. They’re all whimsical and unique in exactly the same way. One of the judges works for Storenvy. The main corporate sponsor for Startup Riot is Mailchimp, along with a flock of smaller sponsors like Uber, Gist, and Twilio. I could staple the mismatched meat of syllables together all afternoon and you wouldn’t be able to tell the legitimate businesses from the illegitimate: Mehole, Kaprah, Yimmy, Blanter, Catzap, Dunzyinonezy, Simplert, Lustaminate.

It gets worse when they start talking about the ideas behind the insipid names.

Hospital bill: 3000 cat scans!

Maga is a cat-loving teen patient with cancer at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She’s had to be in the hospital many times, and during her stays what she misses most is her own cat Merry. We asked our Facebook fans to share their favorite cat photos with us, and got an awesome response — 3,000+ photos! We used these pictures to create this “cat immersion” for Maga — an audio/visual experience to bring thousands of “virtual” cats to Maga’s room.

Check out our Facebook page to see all the photos we received! http://facebook.com/seattlechildrens.

UK man arrested for not smiling during Olympics

A man from Britain with Parkinson’s disease was arrested while watching the Olympic cycling road race because he “failed to smile or look like he was enjoying himself.”

Mark Worsfold, a martial arts trainer and former soldier, said that he was thrown to the floor and handcuffed just as cyclists passed by, Gulf News reported.

His worried wife Nicola only found out he was being held after she reported him missing when he did not turn up for their daughter’s ninth birthday party.

The 54-year-old had his fingerprints, DNA and mugshot taken before being questioned about why he did not appear to be enjoying the event on July 28.

Police said Worsfold, who was held for over five hours, was arrested because of “his manner, his state of dress and his proximity to the course.”

A spokesman added that the arrest was necessary to avoid a breach of the peace because he was standing near a group of protesters.

But Worsfold, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2010, said that one of the symptoms of the disease is muscle rigidity, which can cause his face to become expressionless and mask-like.

  1. They don’t even give The Onion credit for the story. Lame.

  2. Alas, it’s a true story, apparently. The most recent issue of Private Eye ran it as well, they added an ironic quote from former Assistant Police Commissioner John Yates (see the profile of his career on Wikipedia) from is column on the Daily Telegraph, where he praised the police for their “much practiced art of of policing by discretion, with officers acting sensitively and independently, with genuine warmth and humour”.

  3. So much for behavioural profiling.

Russia sect held children underground

Posted on August 10th, 2012 at 3:01 by Sueyourdeveloper in category: Pastafarian News

Four members of a reclusive Muslim sect in the Russian region of Tatarstan have been charged with cruelty against children for allegedly keeping them underground.

Police found 27 children and 38 adults living in catacomb-like cells, dug on eight levels under the home of the sect’s founder. It is not clear how long the children were kept underground.

The founder, 83-year-old Faizrakhman Satarov, who declared himself a Muslim prophet in contradiction with the principles of Islam, was also charged with negligence and arbitrariness on Wednesday, Irina Petrova, deputy prosecutor in the provincial capital of Kazan, told the Associated Press news agency.

Rumour has it that some of these children have never seen the light of day.

  1. Charged with “arbitrariness”? There’s several commenters around here I’d like to submit for consideration under those charges, officer…

  2. It’s considered a virtue in some jurisdictions, your Honour.
