Count GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan among those who didn’t appreciate President Obama’s debate line that the U.S. military has fewer “horses and bayonets.”
“To compare modern American battleships and Navy with bayonets, I just don’t understand that comparison,” Ryan said in an interview that aired Tuesday on CBS’ This Morning.
Perhaps that’s because the Navy doesn’t use battleships any more?

Of course, I can’t find the quotation when I need it, but a few years ago a US admiral said something along the lines of “in the next war, anything the Navy has that’s not a submarine will burn to the waterline.”
Modern missile technology is currently ahead of the curve of the ship defense technology.
Daniel Suarez’s newest book, Kill Decision, postulates swarming, autonomous drones using off the shelf non-military technology that could take out an aircraft carrier. In short, military missile technology may be obsolete. http://www.amazon.com/Kill-Decision-Daniel-Suarez/dp/0525952616/ref=la_B001V206AK_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351053202&sr=1-1
