A police survey says panhandlers outside Wal-Mart in Coos Bay can make $300 a day. Inside, it takes a clerk a week to make that much.

When I lived in Syracuse, NY in the 1980′s, I made an arrangement with a local restaurant to feed local panhandlers. I’d give them a chit good for a free meal, and then weekly I’d pay the restaurant for the redeemed chits. They’d get a decent meal, and I’d feel better about myself! They’d get a healthy meal, and I would not be concerned if they were using the $$ to get high.
@Spaceman: Good idea. I used to give out metro tokens in Montreal (the panhandlers were usually asking for money for a ride home). They mostly refused them.
