Most of us never question or think much about our gender, but it’s an essential part of our identity. And given the endlessly diverse ways people experience their gender, their bodies, and their masculinity or femininity, it’s a wonder there are so few words to describe it. Except there are actually (at least) dozens of gender terms, and Facebook is now offering its users numerous options to present their gender identity to their Facebook friends in the same way they do in the real world (or a different way – because, hey, and it’s your gender identity and you can do what you want).

  1. Is this a commentary on the average Facebook user or a reflection of larger & current societal social values? If so, it describes people so “self” absorbed that they need to micro slice their gender identity to achieve what? Their sense of community? Of belonging? Their social bonds? Are they so self confused, so self out of touch, that they need to flail about on their self identity and submit to latest trend? If so, what a bunch of clueless sheep. What a cultural wasteland. To coin an old term “get a life.”

…… Or is it just the latest pop psychology trends fueled by the Facebook marketing engine to rope in the clueless, lost sheep and then reinforce their serial addiction to other clueless followers & pop trends (i.e. cultural inbreeding at its worse).

  2. Great. Now we can all get arrested by the Ugandan or Indian authorities on our own evidence.
