A Decade’s Worth of WWDC Keynotes

Posted on June 1st, 2014 at 22:03 by John Sinteur in category: Apple

Here’s the truth about WWDC keynotes:

  • The fact that they’re part of a conference devoted to informing developers about Apple’s platforms means that the emphasis will be on software–particularly operating systems–and the odds of a radically new hardware product being announced are just about nil;
  • Since epoch-shifting hardware is out of the picture, any devices which do get announced are, by definition, only incrementally superior to their predecessors;
  • No matter how newsy the keynote is, some people–especially ones who were hoping for something extremely specific which didn’t get announced–will deem it a snoozefest;
  • There’s a very good chance that Apple’s stock will fall in the wake of the keynote, presumably indicating that Wall Steeet was not instantly impressed.

Write a program that makes 2 + 2 = 5 – Programming Puzzles & Code Golf

Write a program that seemingly adds the numbers 2 and 2 and outputs 5. This is an underhanded contest.

import java.lang.reflect.Field;

public class Main {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
        Class cache = Integer.class.getDeclaredClasses()[0];
        Field c = cache.getDeclaredField("cache");
        c.setAccessible(true);
        Integer[] array = (Integer[]) c.get(cache);
        array[132] = array[133];

        System.out.printf("%d",2 + 2);

Bowe Bergdahl, American Soldier, Freed by Taliban in Prisoner Trade

Posted on June 1st, 2014 at 15:29 by John Sinteur in category: News

The lone American prisoner of war from the Afghan conflict, captured by insurgents nearly five years ago, has been released to American forces in exchange for five Taliban detainees held at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, Obama administration officials said Saturday.

What a missed opportunity. They should have traded him for all Guantánamo prisoners, and close down the facility.

  1. If it turns out that guy was a deserter, the US may ask for a refund … :)

  2. You’ve been watching too much Homeland!

  3. Homeland is on the premium pay channels. I don’t have any of them. The only thing I know about Homeland is the parodies what I’ve gleaned on Saturday Night Live.

    I don’t think the military is going to pursue desertion but they most definitely are going to debrief him. They’re doing so now. If someone in on that doesn’t like what he has to say, it will get out and Bergdahl is going to have a hard life in America … even with his parents’ protection. Not saying he’d be better off with the Taliban but he’s not going to be all that welcome here. You were in the military, John. What do you think of deserters?

  4. Nothing I can say here without being accused of suffering from tourette syndrome.

  5. And when I’m done ranting, I will question his motives. Because I must be sure HE is in the wrong, not me for not doing the same thing.

    A small percentage of deserters have good reasons for doing so. I must keep that option open.

  6. Like I said, I don’t think the military is going to pursue it. At least, not in any official capacity. However, Americans lost their lives looking for him. If it turns out he left them willingly, I’m sure some will be happy to listen to his reasons. Some others, though, not so much.

  7. I can understand the position of both groups. I just hope that I would remain cool headed enough to listen first.

Pope Francis: Catholic church has zero tolerance for paedophile priests

Pope Francis has announced his first meeting with a group of sexual abuse victims at the Vatican, declaring that any priests involved in molesting children had performed the equivalent of “a satanic mass”.

“We must go ahead with zero tolerance,” the pope said, adding that three bishops were currently under investigation.

“Sexual abuse is such an ugly crime … because a priest who does this betrays the body of the Lord. It is like a satanic Mass,” said Francis in some of the toughest language he has used on a crisis that has rocked the Church for more than a decade.

Conveniently missing is the phrase “we will hand them over to civil authorities”.

Also missing is the date this zero tolerance begins, since “must go ahead” implies they are still not doing to this very day. Sorry Francis, but I have zero tolerance for marketing bullshit.

Oh, and note that raping kids has far more real-world effects than breaking the rules of your role playing fantasy world satanic mass.

Experts puzzle over $2-billion bid for Clippers

Posted on June 1st, 2014 at 10:48 by John Sinteur in category: News

Steve Ballmer’s $2-billion offer for the Los Angeles Clippers — nearly four times the record sale for an NBA team — has experts puzzling over how the former Microsoft chief plans to make any money on the deal.

But Ballmer, with a net worth estimated at about $20 billion, may have little need for profit. The eye-popping bid from the world’s 34th richest man underscores the explosion in tech wealth and the nonchalance with which billionaires chase trophy brands.

“This reflects an enormously wealthy person buying a toy,” said Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington think tank. “It’s not a financial investment.”

Qatari paid millions for World Cup bid support

Posted on June 1st, 2014 at 9:03 by John Sinteur in category: News

[Quote]:

A British newspaper alleged on Sunday that a former top Qatari football official paid $US5 million ($5.3 million) to get support for the emirate’s campaign to host the 2022 World Cup.

The Sunday Times said it had obtained millions of emails and other documents relating to alleged payments made by Mohamed Bin Hammam, the then FIFA executive member for Qatar.

It alleged that Bin Hammam, who is also the ex-Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president, used slush funds to pay out the cash to top football officials to win a “groundswell” of support for Qatar’s World Cup bid.

Bin Hammam, who launched an abortive challenge against incumbent FIFA president Sepp Blatter, resigned from his FIFA and AFC posts in 2012, shortly before he was banned for life from football administration by the global governing body’s ethics committee.

The newspaper said Bin Hammam had made payments of up to $US200,000 into accounts controlled by the presidents of 30 African football associations, and hosted hospitality events in Africa at which he handed out further funds, to get backing for Qatar’s bid.
